The Kindle, an e-book reader drawing the most attention beside Apple’s rumored tablet, could earn Amazon $1.6 billion in 2010, according to analyst Mark Mahoney. The analyst said the Kindle is having “greater than expected traction” and expects the company to sell 2 million Kindles in 2009 – up from 1.5 million previously forecast.

In November, Amazon announced record sales for the Kindle, saying the e-reader was “flying off the shelves faster than any other product Amazon sells.” The Internet retailer did not release any sales figures, however.

I wanted a case for it. I read all of the reviews on all of the cases over and over again and finally settled on this case. I am SO glad I did. All of the PROS in previous reviews are true. None of the CONS are, at least in my case. The quality of the case is excellent. There is no odor of any kind. The zipped works perfectly. The padding around the zipper means no scratching. I could not ask for more in a case at any price. I don’t know about durability yet as I haven’t had the case long, but from the look and construction quality, I have no question that it will last a long, long time.

It does the job December 15, 2009
S. I don’t have to worry about random stuff falling into the sides & cracks when using the Belkin.

As some have said,it has a slight smell, but nothing that won’t fade.

I just wish it zipped open under the bottom so you could keep the kindle in the case while you read.

 Just fine! December 15, 2009
MarknDC (Washington, DC USA)
I was a little nervous ordering this case because I read so many reviews about smells and poor quality zippers. But mine came today and it’s great! Yeah there is a slight smell (like a rubber mouse pad) but its barely noticeable. (One person who reviewed this case said it smelled up their whole apartment… the fact that this case is so small, I can’t imagine it would smell up a drawer let alone an apartment.) Anyway, it fits the kindle almost perfectly. There is a little room to spare so the zipper fits snugly but not too tight (another reviewer complained about the zipper being too small but I think it is just fine.) If I had to make any change, it would be nice if there were a leather loop/tube at the bottom in which you could store the charger, but its okay without it. All in all, a great case for a good price.

I just purchased a Kindle 2 after my Kindle 1 died, perhaps partially because of the fact it slipped out of its Amazon case (poorly designed in my opinion) and fell a few times, hitting the floor or my desk fairly hard. The Amazon case also did not protect it completely when I was traveling and it was not in use. Since my wife already had a Kindle 2, I was aware that Amazon had provided metal hooks to secure that model in its case, and that the thinner design made it easier to read in the case as well. However, I wanted something to protect my Kindle to the maximum extent possible possible when I was traveling, especially on the train to and from work or when on a plane, rather than just slipping it into a pocket of my briefcase or computer bag and having it fall out by accident when they were open.

After reading the reviews, I decided to buy this Belkin case despite my concern that the Kindle had to be removed from the case to read it and it did not fit in the case with the Amazon cover on it. However, I am DELIGHTED with this product. It is exactly what I expected after reading the description and reviews. The Kindle easily fits in it, and because it only zippers across the top and one side the Kindle will not slip out when you open it. Both front and back are well padded, so you don’t have to worry how you insert your Kindle, the screen will be protected. and the Kindle 2 is so thin and the case so soft and flexible that it easily slips into a corner of my briefcase, there is no noticeable bulk at all. The only complaint I will echo is that the zippers could have been more heavy duty, although I have had no problems with them.

I also bought the Amazon case, expecting to use it when I was reading the Kindle at home or uninterruptedly for a long period of time while traveling, but have found that the design of the Kindle 2 makes it very comfortable to simply read it without a case, especially since the back cover can not slip off as it frequently did with my Kindle 1.

Finally, the neoprene smell of which some reviewers complained has been non-existent. either Belkin has modified the product in some manner or I have been very fortunate, but from the time I unwrapped it there has been no odor at at. And I am very sensitive to all strong smells, being severely allergic and sensitive to many odors and often sneezing uncontrollably when initially exposed to them.

So, if you carry your Kindle when you travel and want to conveniently protect it when it is not in use whether on the road or at home, I highly recommend this case.

If problems develop with this product or it is less durable than it appears, I will edit this review to indicate any problems which arise which would cause me to lower my five star rating.

Transferring Files Via USB

Both Macintosh and Windows users can download and transfer Kindle content, personal documents, and MP3 and Audible files from their computers to their Kindles through the USB connection. When your Kindle is plugged into your computer, your Kindle will appear as a removable mass-storage device.

System Requirements

Windows-based: Windows 2000 or later.

Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

USB port: An available port or an attached USB hub with an available port.

Making the Connection

The illustration below shows a Kindle and a laptop computer connected through the USB cable.

To connect Kindle to your computer:

Plug the larger end of the USB cable into an available USB port or a powered USB hub connected to your computer.

Connect the other end of the USB cable to the micro-USB port on the bottom of your Kindle.

When connected to your PC, your Kindle will go into USB drive mode and its battery will be recharged by the computer. Your Whispernet service is temporarily shut off and you will not receive any of your subscriptions while in this mode. Also, your Kindle is not usable as a reading device while you are in USB drive mode, but will return right to where you were when you undock the device from your computer.

Tip: If you’d like to continue reading your Kindle while its battery is being charged by the computer, you will need to release it from USB drive mode by undocking or ejecting the Kindle from the computer. Note that it is always best to use your computer to undock or eject your Kindle before disconnecting the USB cable. Consult your computer manual for details on how to properly disconnect a USB storage device.

To move files to and from Kindle:

Connect your Kindle to your computer as described above. Your Kindle should appear on your computer in the same location you would normally find an external USB drive.

Use your computer’s file browser to drag and drop files to and from Kindle.

When finished, using your computer’s undock feature to remove your Kindle.

Remember, Kindle will only recognize transferred files if:

File types are listed in the Files Kindle Recognizes section below.

File are transferred to the correct folder for their type.

Files are free of digital rights management software.

Project Gutenberg, abbreviated as PG, is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to “encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks.” Founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. As of December 2009, Project Gutenberg claimed over 30,000 items in its collection. Project Gutenberg is affiliated with many projects that are independent organizations which share the same ideals, and have been given permission to use the Project Gutenberg trademark.

Wherever possible, the releases are available in plain text, but other formats are included, such as HTML, PDF, EPUB, MOBI and Plucker. Most releases are in the English language, but many non-English works are also available. There are multiple affiliated projects that are providing additional content, including regional and language-specific works. Project Gutenberg is also closely affiliated with Distributed Proofreaders, an internet-based community for proofreading scanned texts.
